Y en el Laboratorio del Futuro, una nave situada en las instalaciones de la f\u00e1brica de Kleve, en la regi\u00f3n del Bajo Rin, se puede conocer en carne y hueso este calor. La puerta del horno de alta temperatura se abre lentamente, como un desfiladero. Una cortina de llamas se eleva desde el borde inferior y el aire caliente a\u00fan puede sentirse a varios metros de la c\u00e1mara. En el interior se alcanzan casi 1.000 grados cent\u00edgrados. \"Lo especial de este horno es su adaptabilidad\", dice el jefe de la empresa, Paul van Doesburg: \"Puede funcionar con gas natural, hidr\u00f3geno o incluso energ\u00eda solar. Dependiendo de lo que haya disponible y de las emisiones de CO<sub>2<\/sub> huella que el cliente quiere dejar\". En otras palabras, un todoterreno. Un horno tecnol\u00f3gicamente abierto. Un modelo de arte t\u00e9rmico flexible. Ejemplos t\u00edpicos son las ruedas dentadas para la industria automovil\u00edstica, herramientas como alicates, pero tambi\u00e9n componentes para equipos militares, partes de municiones... o piezas de naves espaciales y sat\u00e9lites. SpaceX, la empresa espacial estadounidense propiedad del jefe de Tesla, Elon Musk, ha utilizado productos endurecidos en hornos del Grupo Ipsen para sus sat\u00e9lites de la red Starlink. Ipsen, escribe la filial estadounidense en Linkedln, siempre ha ayudado a desarrollar materiales y componentes para la exploraci\u00f3n espacial. Ahora tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n a bordo para el regreso a la Luna. Si no hay m\u00e1s remedio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Por lo general, no todos los hornos son iguales. Se necesitan hornos diferentes para materiales diferentes. Los productos para la industria aeroespacial, por ejemplo, se producen principalmente en los llamados hornos de vac\u00edo fabricados por Ipsen. Este tipo de horno calienta el metal en un entorno de baja presi\u00f3n para que no entre en contacto con el ox\u00edgeno, que podr\u00eda contaminarlo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los denominados hornos atmosf\u00e9ricos, en cambio, funcionan con una sobrepresi\u00f3n muy leve, de unos pocos milibares. Y aqu\u00ed es donde entra en juego la nueva tecnolog\u00eda variable, con la que Ipsen no obliga a sus clientes a tener una producci\u00f3n clim\u00e1ticamente neutra, sino que simplemente la hace posible en principio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Todo es posible, nada es obligatorio... Ipsen International traslada este principio libertario al mundo de los hornos, y crea as\u00ed la flexibilidad necesaria para las realidades de la transici\u00f3n energ\u00e9tica, en la que se est\u00e1n probando muchas cosas sin tener claro qu\u00e9 tecnolog\u00edas prevalecer\u00e1n. Es un mundo en el que a veces es arriesgado confiar \u00fanicamente en una v\u00eda. Un mundo hecho para los hornos de Ipsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No inauguraron el Laboratorio del Futuro hasta el a\u00f1o pasado, justo a tiempo para el 75 aniversario de la fundaci\u00f3n de la empresa. Seg\u00fan el mito de la empresa, Harold Ipsen, un ingeniero estadounidense, hizo escala en Kleve en 1948, poco despu\u00e9s de la guerra. En realidad quer\u00eda ir a los Pa\u00edses Bajos, pero de alg\u00fan modo acab\u00f3 al otro lado de la frontera. En el bar del pueblo, Ipsen entabl\u00f3 conversaci\u00f3n con el alcalde y le cont\u00f3 su idea de construir hornos. Y as\u00ed las cosas siguieron su curso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EL ACERO TAMBI\u00c9N DEBE RELAJARSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El alcalde ofreci\u00f3 a Harold Ipsen un granero: el n\u00facleo de la empresa, que hoy tiene sedes en Rockford, Osaka, China e India. Tras algunos altibajos en la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, el Grupo Ipsen emplea actualmente a unas 800 personas, 240 de ellas en Kleve, y alcanz\u00f3 una facturaci\u00f3n de unos 175 millones de euros en 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a9a99e\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a9a99e;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"455\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/ipsenglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Mischbatterie.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9817 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipsenglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Mischbatterie.avif 455w, https:\/\/ipsenglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Mischbatterie-300x190.avif 300w, https:\/\/ipsenglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Mischbatterie-18x12.avif 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuber\u00edas de gas y agua en la carcasa del horno de alta temperatura<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desde 2007, la empresa es propiedad de una sociedad de capital riesgo con sede en Fr\u00e1ncfort, Quadriga Capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El brillante laboratorio del futuro de Ipsen consta de tres unidades, dispuestas una al lado de la otra, que parecen similares, pero tienen funciones diferentes. En el centro, a unos seis metros de altura, se encuentra el nuevo tipo de horno, el todoterreno que han bautizado Atlas Green -por lo que el verde de las letras es tipogr\u00e1ficamente muy similar al verde de Green Peace-, probablemente no sin intenci\u00f3n. Normalmente, este horno se calienta a unos 950 grados cent\u00edgrados; cargas con un peso de hasta dos toneladas se endurecen all\u00ed durante seis o siete horas. Bora \u00d6zkan, tecn\u00f3logo jefe de Ipsen, puede explicar con mucha precisi\u00f3n por qu\u00e9 es bueno que las piezas de acero se relajen en el calor, que las hace menos porosas, m\u00e1s adaptables y m\u00e1s duras. A la izquierda del Atlas hay un horno para el precalentamiento, a su derecha una lavadora ligeramente sobredimensionada: aqu\u00ed es donde se precalienta el material, la carga respectiva, y se limpia despu\u00e9s del tratamiento t\u00e9rmico, por ejemplo de aceite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Atlas Green puede pasar de la cl\u00e1sica calefacci\u00f3n de combustibles f\u00f3siles con gas natural al 100% de hidr\u00f3geno en cuesti\u00f3n de minutos o a la electricidad -idealmente verde- en cuesti\u00f3n de segundos. Los quemadores del techo del horno son variables, aunque los gases difieren en cuanto a densidad energ\u00e9tica y propiedades de combusti\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\"Con nuestra tecnolog\u00eda h\u00edbrida, vamos entre tres a\u00f1os y medio y cuatro a\u00f1os por delante de la competencia\", afirma Bora \u00d6zkan.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c9l y su equipo de desarrollo aprovecharon la \u00e9poca de la pandemia para impulsar la nueva tecnolog\u00eda. Y ahora, dice el Director General Paul van Does- burg, el horno se adapta perfectamente a los tiempos. S\u00ed, para muchos clientes es importante una producci\u00f3n ecol\u00f3gica que sea lo m\u00e1s neutra posible desde el punto de vista clim\u00e1tico. Pero nadie sabe todav\u00eda en qu\u00e9 momento, en qu\u00e9 medida y de qu\u00e9 manera se volver\u00e1 verde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El hidr\u00f3geno verde no siempre est\u00e1 disponible, y la electricidad barata procedente de energ\u00edas renovables, ya sea de parques solares o e\u00f3licos, no siempre se da. Pero el horno sigue en su sitio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Nuestros clientes\", dice van Doesburg, \"no compran hornos con una perspectiva de dos o tres a\u00f1os, sino para 40 a\u00f1os. No podemos ni queremos vender sistemas inutilizables en poco tiempo s\u00f3lo porque el combustible no puede suministrarse como se prometi\u00f3.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LA FLEXIBILIDAD COMO CLAVE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El t\u00e9rmino clave es flexibilidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Muchas plantas de endurecimiento tienen sistemas solares a gran escala en los tejados de sus f\u00e1bricas\", dice van Doesburg. En Ipsen, el procedimiento es el siguiente: Un software desarrollado por \u00d6zkan y su equipo puede calcular exactamente cu\u00e1nto di\u00f3xido de carbono emite el horno durante la producci\u00f3n, as\u00ed como los costes de cada paso de la producci\u00f3n. Si la energ\u00eda renovable est\u00e1 disponible y es barata, las empresas pueden endurecer aquellos productos para los que las emisiones de CO<sub>2<\/sub> es especialmente importante. En cuanto la electricidad verde sea m\u00e1s cara, cuando no brille el sol o no sople el viento, habr\u00e1 que centrarse en los productos para los que se seguir\u00e1 utilizando gas natural o hidr\u00f3geno. \"Un cliente muy concienciado con el medio ambiente puede utilizar el sol durante el d\u00eda; un cliente, para el que las emisiones son menos importantes, puede calentar con gas natural por la noche\", dice \u00d6zkan. \"No damos instrucciones vinculantes, sino que ofrecemos transparencia\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En el Future Lab, se\u00f1ala una pantalla para mostrar c\u00f3mo se puede utilizar la aplicaci\u00f3n para cambiar entre los modos de funcionamiento del horno. Construir el horno es ingenier\u00eda cl\u00e1sica. Pero \u00d6zkan dice que en su equipo de desarrollo hay m\u00e1s programadores que especialistas en hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La inversi\u00f3n ya ha merecido la pena para Ipsen International. \"Desde que a\u00f1adimos el modelo h\u00edbrido a nuestra gama, el 80% de nuestros clientes han pedido esta variante\", afirma van Doesburg. En la nave de la f\u00e1brica, muestra c\u00f3mo se construyen los hornos, c\u00f3mo se reviste la c\u00e1mara con ladrillos y se a\u00edsla y c\u00f3mo se construye la carcasa. Seg\u00fan van Doesburg, un horno tarda unas doce semanas en estar completamente montado. En Europa, la mediana empresa construye sobre todo hornos atmosf\u00e9ricos, y en EE.UU., principalmente la variante de vac\u00edo. La demanda de las empresas de defensa ha aumentado recientemente, como consecuencia del cambio de rumbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ipsen tambi\u00e9n siente la crisis de la industria automovil\u00edstica alemana. Eso est\u00e1 claro. Los clientes de Van Doesburg suelen ser proveedores. Y actualmente atraviesan una fase dif\u00edcil. Seg\u00fan el jefe de Ipsen, alrededor del 40% de la facturaci\u00f3n de la empresa procede de la industria automovil\u00edstica. En estos momentos, a veces visita a un proveedor cuyos almacenes est\u00e1n llenos a reventar porque los pedidos de las empresas automovil\u00edsticas est\u00e1n estancados. \"Puedo entender que de momento no quieran encargar un nuevo horno\", dice van Doesburg. No obstante, la empresa se siente fuerte y bien preparada. Si hay m\u00e1s turbulencias en el mercado, la empresa se concentrar\u00e1 mientras tanto en servicios como la modernizaci\u00f3n de hornos antiguos. O aprovechar\u00e1 el tiempo para seguir desarrollando Atlas Green. Ya hay ideas para ello, dice el Director de Tecnolog\u00eda, Bora \u00d6zkan.
