Deux sous-syst\u00e8mes sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement inclus dans chaque syst\u00e8me de pompage de four \u00e0 vide : la pompe de diffusion et la pompe de surpression. L'ajout d'une pompe \u00e0 diffusion permet d'obtenir une pression syst\u00e8me inf\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle que l'on peut obtenir avec le syst\u00e8me \u00e0 deux \u00e9tages seul. La pompe \u00e0 diffusion ne peut pas fonctionner de mani\u00e8re autonome ; elle n\u00e9cessite le fonctionnement simultan\u00e9 d'une pompe de maintien pendant les modes de fonctionnement \u00e0 vide afin de r\u00e9duire la pression interne de la pompe \u00e0 diffusion. Pendant le fonctionnement de la pompe \u00e0 diffusion, la vanne de la pompe de maintien est isol\u00e9e, et les pompes primaires et secondaires servent de syst\u00e8me de soutien \u00e0 la pompe \u00e0 diffusion. Le fluide situ\u00e9 au fond de la pompe est chauff\u00e9 jusqu'\u00e0 \u00e9bullition et pouss\u00e9 vers le haut par le centre de l'ensemble de jets. Les mol\u00e9cules de brouillard d'huile supersoniques sont projet\u00e9es vers le bas par les gicleurs, for\u00e7ant les mol\u00e9cules de gaz plus l\u00e9g\u00e8res \u00e0 se diriger vers le bas de la pompe. Les mol\u00e9cules de gaz sont collect\u00e9es au niveau de la buse d'\u00e9jection et extraites de la pompe par le syst\u00e8me de pompage. L'huile, au contact des parois lat\u00e9rales froides, reprend sa forme liquide et se rassemble au fond de la pompe pour \u00eatre r\u00e9chauff\u00e9e.
